Australian studio Hassell was approached by the Jodrell Bank Observatory with a design project. Located in Chesire, England, the institution wanted to transform the visitor experience and celebrate the First Light Pavilion which is located in the atrium of the Jodrell Bank Observatory. The piece was designed by the institution’s first director, Bernard Lovell, and was recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2021.
Hassell needed to create an exhibition space that evoked “a journey of discovery” for visitors while being mindful of the protected site. The studio drew inspiration from this and placed the entire structure beneath a “grass-covered concrete dome” that was inspired by the Lovell Telescope—this is the country’s largest radio telescope. Light trickles into the space through a slender cut-out.
